For this year’s Farm to Table gathering, we added a special feature of an art exhibit to uplift spirits and bring the power of beauty to the event. The exhibit includes a new set of commissioned art posters to help people remember the four principles of soil health and celebrate that “We Are 4 the Soil!” Because being inspired can help us take action again and again.
If you look closely - and know history - you may notice that these posters were inspired themselves by an era in our nation’s history when positive messaging was elevated by artists to bring people together to rebuild the country after the Great Depression in the 1930s.
During President Franklin Roosevelt’s “New Deal” program, the Works Progress Administration (WPA) was formed to help get out-of-work Americans back on the job and support federal programs including the Farm Security Administration.
Posters created by WPA artists of the time promoted tree planting to recover from the dust bowl, encouraged farmers to cover plots of land, and celebrated the growing of food to support people’s lives. For own newly commissioned set of posters, artist and curator & author of Posters for the People: Art of the WPA Ennis Carter created imagery that harkens from other WPA poster designs to help spread the word for healthy soil.
Now, nearly 90 years later, these messages still resonate and have inspired a new collection of art to amplify and remind us about the important ways we can protect soil health by staying engaged.
