Featured Resource: The Complete Guide to Restoring Your Soil by Dale Strickler

To complement the recent 4 The Soil: A Conversation with Dale Strickler of Regenerative Wisdom on the unintended consequences of deep tillage, we are sharing Dale’s recent book The Complete Guide to Restoring Your Soil as a featured resource. Dale draws on his experience and expertise as a farmer, cattle rancher, and college soil science instructor to provide a thorough accessible manual for building soil health and restoring function. In the guide, Dale explored how tillage can be destructive and further degrade soil. Dale specifically states that we must develop a system of farming without tillage that is just as profitable as more profitable than farming with tillage. In chapter 8, Dale outlines no-till problems and solutions and specifically addresses eight common myths, misconceptions, and misnomers regarding reduced tillage or moving toward a never till farming system.

“Going against tradition can be a very, very lonely journey, and there will be people who honestly want you to fail, because if you succeed, they will appear stupid for not doing it themselves. And chances are, they will not even acknowledge that you succeeded. Do not seek affirmation from your tillage neighbors. You will not receive it. Seek the company of fellow no-tillers, especially ones who are ahead of you on the learning curve. You will find their company (whether face-to-face or on the phone or by email) much more rewarding than time spent being criticized by neighbors who hope you will fail.” ~ Dale Strickler – a brief excerpt from The Complete Guide to Restoring Your Soil p. 218.
